Marty lived a big life. 

The years were a tumult of passionate scientific work, romantic entanglements and complicated family situations. 

His book shelves were full of biographies; he found the lives of Einstein, Ghandi, Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin deeply inspiring.  He could spend hours discussing the contradictions of public ideals and the chaotic currents of private life. 

During the last few months of his life, we had an ongoing, lively discussoin about The Jefferson's of Monticello, a book about Sally Hemmings, Thomas Jefferson, and their eight children.

Although we knew that the end of his life might be near, I found comfort in reminding myself, "No matter how big a mess Marty leaves behind, it is not going to be nearly as bad as Thomas Jeffersons'!"
